TOALC Winter/Spring Semester: All remaining classes and events cancelled effective immediately
[The following announcement was emailed on 3/12/2020 to all members and class leaders]
The TOALC Advisory Board has decided to cancel all classes and events remaining in the Winter Semester effective immediately. We take this action in the interest of the safety of our members as we deal with the COVID-19 virus. The TOALC Advisory Board will meet on April 1 to consider next steps. We will post regular updates on the TOALC website at theoalc.org as the situation and TOALC's response develop. In the meantime, we will continue planning for our Summer Semester (May 18 - Jul 17) and Kickoff (May 17). Course books will be mailed out to members and distributed to public locations in mid-April. The full schedule and course book distribution points will be posted on the TOALC website about the same time. We hope that special Winter semester events such as the "Roaring 20s" dance can be rescheduled for the summer or fall semesters. TOALC's decision to close was not taken lightly. We realize that our members rely on TOALC for educational stimulation and social engagement. We seniors are among those most likely to suffer severe complications from COVID-19. But we did not want to react out of panic. Over the last two days, we reviewed CDC and Pennsylvania State Health Dept. recommendations. We also contacted other area agencies to discuss their planned responses. In the end, we decided that closing was in the best interest of our members. Repeating advice from the CDC communicated in earlier emails: Don't panic. Turn to the CDC ( https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html ) or the World Health Organization ( https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019 ) for all the latest information on COVID-19. Beware of rumors, conspiracy talk, uncorroborated news stories and social media postings. Stay home if you are sick. Patients with COVID-19 have had mild to severe respiratory illness with symptoms of fever, cough, and shortness of breath. When you go out in public, keep away from others who are sick.Limit close contact and wash your hands often.Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. Cough into your sleeve if a tissue is not available. For those of you who find you have been unable to attend any classes for which you registered because of wait-listing or because of this cancellation of remaining classes, please contact the TOALC office for a refund of your winter registration fee or a credit on your summer 2020 registration.
