About the Event

Learn about anthropologist, ceramist, scholar and antiquarian Henry Chapman Mercer (1856-1930) through a multimedia presentation including photos, historic footage, and comedic moments.

Go on a virtual tour of the Mercer Museum, a Smithsonian affiliate, which holds a collection of more than 50,000 American pre-industrial tools from sixty different crafts and trades.

Then visit Fonthill Castle, Mercer's home and showplace for his collection of tiles and prints. The castle serves as an early example of reinforced concrete and features forty-four rooms, over two hundred windows, and eighteen fireplaces. Fonthill Castle’s interior features Mercer’s renowned, hand crafted ceramic tiles designed at the height of the Arts and Crafts movement.
