Please join us for a lecture/performance class on the unlikely pairing of the music of English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) with the poetry of Anglican priest George Herbert (1593-1633). We will begin by singing 5 hymns with music composed, arranged or selected by Vaughan Williams as editor of The English Hymnal of 1906. David Learn will talk about Vaughan Williams and play recordings; Mike Liberman will talk about the 17th century poet George Herbert. The program will conclude with David Learn (tenor) and Joan Stiles (pianist), performing Vaughan Williams' Five Mystical Songs, a setting of Herbert's poems.
